Discovering Beauty in the Natural World

THE STORY   —   01

To Mr. Adventure, almost anything can become music. The sound of footsteps on soil. The rustle of fallen leaves. The subtle textures of a forest far from the city. For composer and producer Junichi Matsuda, nature is more than a source of inspiration. It is a living collection of sounds waiting to be discovered.

“I can already see the screen in my head. I can hear how the loops will come together. So I follow my instincts, tapping on things, recording whatever catches my attention. Everything can become material.”

Matsuda has been collecting samples since his teenage years, building an extensive archive from purchased libraries, friends and his own recordings. But after decades of working with sound, he began to find many commercially available samples too familiar, too polished, too predictable.

“When I create my own sounds, I can keep the imperfections. I don’t need everything to be cleaned up.”

Those imperfections have become part of his creative language. Footsteps on earth can become a kick drum. Fallen leaves can add texture to a percussion loop. Sounds gathered outdoors find their way into Afro House, Amapiano and other forms of dance music.

His approach can be heard across works including AZTEC, JOMON, YAYOI, MAYAN and smokey bonfire, as well as Amapiano collaborations with Mbali Baby.

Yet going into nature is not simply a search for new material. “I love spending time in the city, too. But when I go somewhere deep in the mountains, where I can no longer hear cars, my senses come back into focus. It resets my ears.”

He moves between the energy of the city and the stillness of the natural world, drawing something different from each.

The rawness of a sound may be accidental. What he ultimately creates with it is anything but. “My music can work anywhere,” he says. “Because I’ve created a complete world within it.”

For Mr. Adventure, creative freedom and perfectionism are not opposites. They are two essential parts of the same process.

BEYOND THE FAMILIAR

Encounters with Sound, Culture and the Unknown

FIELD NOTES / CULTURE
THE STORY   —   02

In an unfamiliar city, a voice rises above the streets. His first instinct is to follow it.

One of Junichi Matsuda’s earliest and most vivid impressions of traveling abroad was hearing the adhan, the Islamic call to prayer. “I wanted to go towards the voice. The first thing I wanted to do was listen.”

For Matsuda, traveling has never been only about seeing new places. It is also about experiencing the beliefs, traditions and everyday lives that give those places their character.

He recalls attending Georgian Orthodox services and visiting churches across Northern Europe and the Baltic states. These were experiences that changed his life. “There was something mysterious and spiritual about them. But there was also nature, and life.”

Their influence is not necessarily found in a borrowed melody or an imitation of a particular acoustic space. What stays with him is the history he felt, the atmosphere he experienced and the memory of being there.

Travel has also transformed the way he sees Japan. Temples, shrines, Japanese cuisine and familiar customs once seemed naturally exceptional to him. Encountering other cultures helped him recognize how deeply his own perspective had been shaped by the country in which he grew up.

“Now, even when I’m in Japan, I experience it like a traveler. The scenery, everyday life — it’s about how you look at the country where you were born.”

The familiar becomes unfamiliar again. And in that shift, new possibilities emerge. His musical curiosity moves just as freely across borders. Latin rhythms, African music, Middle Eastern sounds and influences from Central Asia have all found their way into his creative vocabulary.

But he has little interest in reproducing them exactly. “I learn through feeling, so I don’t really copy. I’m a perfectionist when it comes to my own music, but when I draw from something else, I follow my instincts. That’s probably why the result becomes something a little different.”

That balance extends beyond music. He is drawn to boldness, color and extravagance, but not to anything that feels cheap or careless.

The goal is creative freedom with refinement: work that can belong naturally in the worlds of fashion, luxury and international culture without sacrificing its individuality. For Mr. Adventure, sophistication is not the absence of excess. It is knowing how to give bold ideas a world of their own.

A STUDIO WITHOUT WALLS

Making Music, Collecting Moments

FIELD NOTES / TRAVEL
THE STORY   —   03

Music can always be made later. That’s exactly why making it in the moment matters.

For Junichi Matsuda, producing music while traveling is not simply about being able to work from anywhere. It is about preserving a moment of his life.

A morning spent working on a terrace in Paris, after an unforgettable night at the Moulin Rouge. An apartment in Malaysia where the dryer wouldn’t work. Grand experiences and ordinary inconveniences become equally vivid memories, connected to the music he was making at the time.

“When you travel so much and make so much music, new experiences keep replacing old memories. You start to forget things.”

Returning to a track can bring back the person he was then, along with the story surrounding its creation. His music becomes a personal archive, holding moments that might otherwise disappear.

Even his choice of where to work reflects this philosophy. “I look for places I haven’t photographed before. Somewhere I haven’t done it yet.” Each new setting offers another experience to remember, another image to capture and another story to attach to a piece of music.

One particularly memorable place was a local hotel in Athens, a city he loves. On the top floor was a café terrace with a piano that was not quite in tune. He spent time there relaxing, playing and absorbing the atmosphere.

Sounds from that piano later found their way into With the Glow and other compositions. The instrument’s imperfections became part of the memory, and part of the music.

Yet travel is not always a solitary creative experience. Matsuda often approaches musicians himself, allowing a conversation or a chance encounter to turn spontaneously into making music together. Among those connections are Arashk, a pianist educated at Tehran University of Art whom he met in Estonia, and Ezi Q in Malaysia. Different backgrounds, different cultures, a shared desire to create.

After years of traveling, Matsuda has begun to feel that being in Japan and being abroad are no longer two separate states of mind. The distance between home and elsewhere has grown smaller.

And that realization has shaped what he wants to create next. “I want to make music that brings people together — beyond rules, cultures and religions. I want us to create something amazing together.”

There will always be another place to discover, another person to meet and another sound to explore. For Mr. Adventure, the studio has no walls. And the story is still being written.
